What is Integrated Pest Management?

Integrated Pest Management is a scientific approach to pest control that emphasizes pest monitoring and non-chemical control methods (such as exclusion and trapping), as opposed to the routine use of pesticides. Instead of routinely spraying insecticides throughout a building, IPM technicians perform thorough inspections of all areas of the account, and apply corrective measures when pest infestations or conditions conducive to pest infestations are found.

Depending on the situation, corrective measures may consist of installing sticky traps or light traps to catch the pests, sealing up cracks and crevices, installing window screens or air curtains, installing multiple-catch mousetraps, or applying a chemical pesticide.

When pesticides are used, every effort is made to select the least-toxic product that will be effective against the particular pest. Nowadays, this is pretty easy: The last decade has seen an explosion in the availability of low-toxicity, naturally-derived pest control products. These products are sometimes called “organic” pesticides.

In addition, IPM programs tend to concentrate more on the outsides of buildings than conventional pest control programs do. Many pest problems can be taken care of by exterior treatments or non-chemical exclusion methods, which in turn reduces or eliminates the need to apply pesticides inside the buildings.

Many businesses and organizations are required either by law or policy (or both) to utilize the IPM approach. But IPM is also gaining popularity even where it’s not absolutely required because it minimizes the use of chemical pesticides, which is always a good idea, but is an especially good idea in business environments. By reducing pesticide use, you also reduce odors, staining, inconvenience to employees and customers, and complaints from individuals who claim to have become ill as a result of a pesticide application.
